While these children are happy and enthusiastic and get on so well for siblings, their lives aren't perfect and it is the realisation that their optimism might be worthless that produces the drama, and makes the film not only beautiful, but also really moving. I own it now, so I will be able to watch it plenty more times, and I might show my little cousins too.Andy Bucklehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15655573933693289124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890338907751315894.post-77448911708899104792012-04-18T20:33:48.597+10:002012-04-18T20:33:48.597+10:00I look forward to your thoughts on Totoro, Ruth. I have been happy with that decision. The film is adorable, and I agree the giant Totoro is extremely huggable.Andy Bucklehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15655573933693289124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890338907751315894.post-15039427887256977532012-04-18T20:31:58.499+10:002012-04-18T20:31:58.499+10:00I think I will grow to love it even more, but it h...I think I will grow to love it even more, but it has been a very pleasant addition to this very exciting Ghibli marathon.Andy Bucklehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15655573933693289124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890338907751315894.post-934412103349794432012-04-17T08:50:33.183+10:002012-04-17T08:50:33.183+10:00I agree that this is the best portrayal of the joy...I agree that this is the best portrayal of the joy of childhood. I love, love, love this film. It's so beautiful and wonderful. I love that the film doesn't feel the need to build some conflict or give the children some big issue to face or overcome. It's simply children living, playing and experiencing life.Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00999103091301885129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890338907751315894.post-23444812332223573012012-04-14T11:36:03.230+10:002012-04-14T11:36:03.230+10:00Two weeks until I finally see it!!
Spirited Away ...Two weeks until I finally see it!! <br />Spirited Away is my favourite too, but whenever I see another Ghibli film it's position always wobbles slightly. I love Laputa and Princess Mononoke so much, and Nausicaa and Porco Rosso. Arrietty was one of the most charming films I've seen this year too!Ruthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00175638828147935702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890338907751315894.post-15023009113699868402012-04-14T09:04:50.970+10:002012-04-14T09:04:50.970+10:00I watched this recently and like you I loved the i...I watched this recently and like you I loved the innocence of it, the lack of villains. And Totoro is the most huggable creature in the world, don't you think? The only thing I didn't like about the film was the shrill Japanese voices. But that was easily fixed by using the Swedish sound instead.Jessicahttp://www.thevelvetcafe.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890338907751315894.post-7326719507121039902012-04-14T07:52:10.883+10:002012-04-14T07:52:10.883+10:00I think it's the pure childhood innocence and ...I think it's the pure childhood innocence and lack of villains which makes this that little bit extra special. Miyazaki doesn't need a negative force to fuel his stories. These are simply wonderful adventures with beautifully imagined characters. I love this film more than I can adequately describe.
