But I thought that Ron Pearlman, rather than being a product of "weak characterization" was in fact quite complicated: much more than a mere henchman, a reluctant henchman who despised his master.simoncolumbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09027922399726786918noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890338907751315894.post-18403128654999481892011-08-21T22:24:36.316+10:002011-08-21T22:24:36.316+10:00@ James - I guess I haven't seen enough of Del...@ James - I guess I haven't seen enough of Del Toro. I really didn't like Hellboy 2, though I know you did. I might revisit both Hellboy and the sequel again. I love Pan's Labyrinth, but I really need to see The Devil's Backbone. In Cronos it's a really interesting twist on the vampire genre - you don't really know what is happening to him, but that bathroom scene is really something. Definitely a strong debut feature.

@ Robert - I haven't seen Hellraiser, but I definitely enjoyed Cronos.

@ I look forward to hearing your thoughts. It would look great on Criterion I'm sure...Andy Bucklehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15655573933693289124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890338907751315894.post-11694586532038092152011-08-20T07:06:21.978+10:002011-08-20T07:06:21.978+10:00I just bought the Criterion DVD last month but I h...I just bought the Criterion DVD last month but I haven't watched it yet due to the various projects I'm working on. Seems like a good companion piece for Hellraiser, although this film is probably a lot classier.Roberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10394045103473759585noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890338907751315894.post-90311388412048650922011-08-19T14:23:18.365+10:002011-08-19T14:23:18.365+10:00It's a solid film, I actually thought the plot...It's a solid film, I actually thought the plotting was somewhat original and thoughtful in the slow reveal of what is happening. Once you understand what is going on, it's a great revelation.

What I didn't care for as much was, like you said, the shallow characters. Still, a strong first feature for one of my favorite working directors.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
