Sunday Links (11/09)


Well, TIFF 2011 has commenced with a number of bloggers beginning their much-anticipated coverage. Some are listed below. The 68th Venice International Film Festival is now over, with Alexander Sukurov's Faust claiming the Golden Lion. I have listed the award winners here. While he responses to The Ides of March, Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy, A Dangerous Method and Shame were all modest to excellent, with the exception of Michael Fassbender for Shame, they were all overlooked.

This week has been an odd one. A few personal crises haven't overwhelmed the excellent news I also received. I have been added to the media invite lists of a few distribution companies, meaning I will on occasion have privileged access to advanced screenings. I have had limited time to make it to the cinema this week, instead continuing my coverage of the upcoming Italian Film Festival with a review of Lost Kisses. I also re-visited some others (A History of Violence and Minority Report), and shared my thoughts on The Help and Super. 

So, getting in a day early (so I can devote tomorrow to watching films), here are some links:

Toby @ Blah Blah Blah Gay shares his thoughts on Everything Must Go.

Bonjour Tristesse reviews a pair of Hungarian films from director Bela Tarr: Satantango and Werckmeister Harmonies.

James @ Cinema Sights has updated his Top 100 Films. It is one of the most unique and interesting lists out there.

Anders @ Cut Print Review gives a nice review of Submarine, a film I intend to see this week.

Sam @ Duke and the Movies shares his unique thoughts on Contagion, the new Soderbergh flick. 

Cherokee @ Feminising Film also unveils her Top 100 Films. Be sure to check this out. She has put a lot of work into this list.

Tom Clift @ Movie Reviews By Tom Clift has written a great article about Melbourne's Cult Cinema Scene. 

Colin @ Pick 'N' Mix Flix shares his thoughts on Shane Meadows' This is England and Dead Man's Shoes.

Tyler @ Southern Vision lists some Paul Thomas Anderson Characters Who Deserve Their Own Movie!

Steven @ Surrender to the Void reviews a film I have wanted to see for some time, Taste of Cherry.

Finally, Jessica @ The Velvet Cafe writes about her experience watching Exit Through the Gift Shop. What an experience it is!

    Thanks for the link. I do recommend that film for anyone that is interested in the work of Kiarostami or any kind of minimalist cinema.

    Thanks for the link, Andy! Glad to know that you can tell I have put a lot of work into it, too. Was a struggle, but I managed to do it in the end! (And have plenty more new additions I am going to consider adding at the end of the year.)

    Definitely going to have a look at Cinema Sights list!
