Desert Island CD - 12 Tracks From Movie Soundtracks I Love

Castor and the loyal community over at Anomalous Material have been creating their personal Desert Island CD's.

"The concept is simple: You are stranded on a desert island with just one CD to listen to (and miraculously a neolithic CD player). What are 12 tracks you most desperately want to have on that CD? The only requirement is that each track comes from a movie soundtrack."

I was interested in what I could personally come up with, so I decided to make my own.

 1. "Adagio for Strings" by Samuel Barber from Platoon

2. "Fargo, North Dakota" by Carter Burwell from Fargo

 3. "In the House, In a Heartbeat" by John Murphy from 28 Days Later

 4. "Pusherman" by Curtis Mayfield from Superfly

5. "El Tango De Roxanne" from Moulin Rouge

 6. "La Valse de Amelie" from Amelie

 7. "If You Want Me" by Marketa Iglova from Once

8. "California Dreaming" by The Mamas and the Papas from Chungking Express

9. "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow" by The Soggy Bottom Boys from O Brother Where Art Thou

10. "In the Hall of the Mountain King" remixed by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor from The Social Network

 11. "First we Take Manhattan" by Leonard Cohen from Watchmen

12. "The End" by The Doors from Apocalypse Now

  1. Gah! The 28 DAYS LATER theme came SO close to making my list! As did just about every song from ONCE, come to think of it.

  2. I sorted through about 30 tracks to come up with this, and I still forgot about hundreds more I am sure. I had a look at the CD's of other bloggers, and there are very few overlaps. Overall, it's a great tribute to music in film. I love a great movie soundtrack and the Ross/Reznor work for The Social Network has had some heavy play recently!

  3. Great choices Andy
Samuel Barber's score for Platoon made it onto my list as well, it's so moving...

I love The Doors as well, I'm glad to see the Apocalypse Now intro included.

In the hall of the Mountain King was my favourite piece from The Social Network, and that scene in particular was very well shot.

  4. Oh I adore that Le Tango de Roxanne... the scene is just brilliant, best tango scene in movies! I have a Moulin Rogue song on my list as well, hard to pick which one to include.

That "Adagio for Strings" is so heart-wrenching. I actually heard it not in Platoon, haven't seen the movie, but I really love that kind of music.

    Great list, Andy!

  5. When I watched Moulin Rouge again (after really disliking it on first viewing) it was the scene that stuck out. Still haven't shaken it. Adagio for Strings is so amazing. It is used so well in Platoon. You must see it!

    Thanks, Ruth.

  6. @ Jack L That scene in The Social Network is wonderfully captured and edited. And In the Hall of the Mountain King is one of my favorite pieces of music! Had to include it!
