Screenshots: Inglourious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino, 2009)

I love Inglourious Basterds. It is my favourite Quentin Tarantino film since Pulp Fiction. Tarantino, a man who is so aware of the history of cinema, fuses this extensive knowledge into this ingenious screenplay, with countless references. Essentially, the whole film is a homage to The Dirty Dozen too. Robert Richardson's cinematography is absolutely beautiful. The way that the colours pop off the screen, especially the red in the Nazi emblems and Melanie Laurent's dress, is incredible. The use of top lighting is also very effective. There are so many memorable sequences, but I think the thrilling bar sequence and the climax at the Parisian theatre are the most exceptional. Also, it features wonderful performances from Christoph Waltz and Melanie Laurent. Rather than closely examine the film in preparation for a review, I prefer to just enjoy it. I have lost count of the amount of times I have seen it now.

After the jump, some of the film's most memorable screenshots:

  1. I have seen this movie so many times, it's one of my most favourite films. Christoph Waltz is simply A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. in it!

  2. Yeah Tarantino uses colour extremely well..I think that is why he one of my most favorite film makers. He reminds me of David Lean in using colour and natural suroundings so well.

  3. I think what I love most about this post is that you mention Melanie right up there with Christoph. If it hadn't been for Mo'Nique's game-changing, unbeatable performance that year, Laurent SO would've been my choice for Best Supporting Actress. The red dress will probably go down in movie wardrobe history.

  4. @ Stevee - It is most excellent, and the timing of Christoph Walt's performance, and those dialogue sequences in impeccable. While there are moments of silence, and long pauses, it is so captivating.

@ Brent - Absolutely. The red of the freshly scalped head contrasted against the cold, damp forest earth. Haha. Thanks for stopping by!

@ Chris - Many thanks. Cheers for stopping by!

@ Luke - I thought she was superb. I really disliked Precious, so I was very against Monique's unbeatable odds. But Melanie Laurent's balance of burning hatred, intense fear and desperate level headedness in that scene with Waltz was what won me over.

@ Lesya - Never gets old. Few films entertain me more. Thanks for reading!

  5. My favorite scene is Melane Laurent's Shoshanna preparing her revenge to the music of David Bowie's "Cat People". Oh, it gave me chills and it's one of my favorite films of 2009. I'm not sure where I'll put in the best of the decades list but I do love that film.

  6. Need to watch this again. Such a great, entertaining movie with great actors, scenes, fun details, characters.

My favourite scene is the bar scene. Ok ok I'm a bit too partial to Fassbender.

  7. Great screencaps Andrew. I loved this movie but it's odd, I have only seen once. I just received the DVD (Netflix) though I'm going to watch it again real soon :)

  8. @ Steven - I know, I love that scene too!

@ Anna - It is really entertaining. There are so many great scenes. I think my favourite is the bar scene too. That cast (back in 09) was highlighted by the recognisable names of Pitt and Dianne Kruger. But Waltz, Laurent, Fassbender have all become huge following the release.

@ Castor - Thanks Castor. So many shots from this film stick with me. I hope it is just as rewarding on a repeat viewing.

  9. I came here to say what thevoid said. "Putting out fire with gasoline!"
