Listed are the five nominees for Best Original Score, with a sample of their score. Who do you think will win, and perhaps more importantly, who would you vote for?
Ludovic Bource - The Artist
Howard Shore - Hugo
John Williams - War Horse
John Williams - The Adventures of Tintin
Alberto Iglesias - Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
I really loved the TINKER TAILOR score. It successfully conveyed the atmosphere of the film. I think THE ARTIST will win though. Without that score, the film would be unwatchable.
ReplyDeleteI really loved the Tinker Tailor Score too - and it was my bold prediction to get a nom. I expected Bource and Shore to get nominated, but I also expected Reznor/Ross. I would have preferred them to make it over Williams, though his Tintin score was great. In the end, Bource will win for The Artist - it is so essential, and it really is very good.
DeleteI really loved the War Horse score, but know it'll go to the Artist though.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think The Artist will win, and though I thought Williams score was beautiful, I thought it was terribly overused, which for me, eradicated the beauty and made it quite intrusive and manipulative. It is the score I would have dropped out - but that's just me personally, because I much care for the film. Thanks for the comment Heather - and for recently following :-)
DeleteThis isn't much of a contest. The Artist's score was a vital part of that silent movie. No other movie this year can say that. Thanks for rounding up some of the scores though Andy.
ReplyDeleteI think Tinker Tailor featured some very impressive work from Alberto Iglesias (who also wonderfully scored The Skin I Live In). He really captured the mood, I thought. Howard Shore always does great work - and his collaborations with Cronenberg are my favourite. But, yes, THE ARTIST will win this - and rightly so. I have had these scores playing a lot as I write, so it wasn't hard to track them down. 2011 was a year of great scores - DRIVE/CONTAGION/ATTACK THE BLOCK/DRAGON TATTOO/TREE OF LIFE/IDES OF MARCH/RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES etc.
DeleteI think the score for The Artist will win. I'm just upset that Cliff Martinez's work for Drive (which was disqualified due to a technicality) as well as the work of Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Jonny Greenwood's work for We Need to Talk About Kevin weren't nominated.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree. Martinez was ineligible from a while ago - but I thought his work in Contagion was just as good. I forgot about Greenwood. Yeah, that was a great score too. You know how I feel about Reznor/Ross - should have taken one of Williams' slots. Oh well. Bource will win this, no question.
DeleteThe Artist all the way. The movie simply wouldn't have worked without the score, regardless of the great acting that went into it. I actually liked the War Horse score too, although I thought its use in the movie was a bit offensive to anyone over the age of six. "Hey--something important's about to happen!"
ReplyDeleteYeah, the War Horse score really irked me. I'd like to see Iglesias win - but I have no issues with The Artist taking this award out...and it will!
DeleteI like Harry Escott for Shame. No, wait. Martinez for Drive. No, wait. Greenwood for WNTTAK. No, wait.
ReplyDeleteI hate this category this year.
This is usually one of my favourite categories - but there were so many great scores this year, that we were bound to be disappointed. But John Williams? Really? Loved Iglesias, and always been a fan of Shore - but Escott's ticking time bomb should have been recognised, definitely.
DeleteBefore I saw the Artist today I would have said Tinker Tailor. I still love it, but as soon as I saw the Artist, I had to go out and buy the soundtrack. Listening as I type. Bource did a great job, with so much relying on his music!
ReplyDeleteYeah I made that shift too, after hearing The Artist. But I was pretty obsessed with Iglesias' work in TTSS
DeleteGreat tremendous issues here. I'm very satisfied to see your post. Thanks a lot and I'm having a look forward to contact you. Will you please drop me a mail?
