This post was inspired by the most recent episode of The Matineecast hosted by Ryan McNeil, where he asks listeners to comment by revealing the films they are most anticipating in the Fall. I thought I would look through the films scheduled for release in Australia over the next three months and pick out some I would suggest checking out. A few of these I have already seen (at SFF and MIFF), but I can't wait for Midnight in Paris. That three week block in October is awesome - Take Shelter/Midnight in Paris/Drive - seriously, save your pennies for then.
13 Assassins (Takashi Miike) - September 8
Submarine (Richard Ayoade) - September 8
Project Nim (James Marsh) - September 29
Crazy, Stupid Love (Glenn Ficara) - September 29
Midnight in Paris (Woody Allen) - October 20
Drive (Nicholas Winding Refn) - October 27
50/50 (Jonathan Levine) - November 10
Moneyball (Bennett Miller) - November 10
So there you have it. What Spring/Fall films are you most looking forward to?

Can't say I was familiar with Take Shelter. Thank you. I look forward to it. And Drive. I so, so, so, so, so want to see Drive.
ReplyDeleteWhere the f*** is tintin?
ReplyDeleteI would rather watch those this fall rather than wait until next spring. But thank you ;)
ReplyDelete@ Nicholas - It's a great American apocalyptic thriller starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain. Both should find themselves recognised at Oscar time. Drive is flat out cool.
ReplyDelete@ Simon - Tintin gets a release here at Christmas. Boxing Day I believe. I bet you guys get it earlier haha.
@ Castor - Ha. I bet your Fall lineup looks even better than mine. With the exception of what I have already seen, it's pretty ugly. Don't worry, I'll be waiting for most of your Winter stuff until next Fall anyway.
I can tell you already, 13 ASSASSINS and TAKE SHELTER are great! Wasn't as crazy about PROJECT NIM, but it's still solid (plays kind of like a RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES prequel actually :P)
ReplyDeleteIn addition to almost all of these, I'm psyched for WINNIE THE POOH (Sept 1), RED STATE (Sept 22), THE THING (Oct 13) and WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN (Nov 3)
@ Tom : I have already seen 13 Assassins, Take Shelter, Project Nim and Drive haha. I loved them all for different reasons. You're right about Apes; the first half is pretty close to Nim. Why didn't I find these other titles when I looked them up on RT? Oh well, definitely psyched for Red State, The Thing and We Need to Talk About Kevin. The trailer for the latter is pretty creepy! Thanks Tom.
ReplyDeleteTom, that has prompted me to make a substitution haha.
ReplyDeleteWoah, woah, woah...Richard Ayoade, as in Moss from the I.T Crowd, directed Submarine!! Mind. Blown. How did I not know this!!!
ReplyDeleteIf I see 50/50, I know I will cry, but I will see it, because JGL is in it.
Yarp, the very same. Apparently it's damn good too. I intend to see all of these films. Well, some I have seen, but I'll see them again. Hatter, I mean Ryan haha, just gave CSL four stars. I've been convinced to give it a go.
ReplyDeleteI'm confused by the title .. AHH YES! Different seasons in Australia ..
ReplyDeleteNim looks great, so does Drive! And the cancer thing with JGL could be hit/miss!
Probs see all of these anyway, Midnight this weekend!
Good picks!
I feel pretty confident about all of these, except Crazy, Stupid Love. But Ryan gave it 4 stars this week, so I suddenly became interested in seeing it. Yes, there are different seasons in Australia haha. The ones you mentioned are both excellent (esp. Nim). Enjoy Midnight in Paris. I have to say, I am a little jealous :-p
