Damn, that's a good list. For me, it's a little bit harder because when it comes to year-end lists. I have a tendency to be a perfectionist. It's because I want to see the best of everything and I'm not done till I say that I'm done which is why I'm still not finished with my list of films from 2010.
Since I'm going by when it was released first and where, that makes it more difficult which is why it's likely that a film like Beginners won't be in my 2011 release but will be in the 2010 list because it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival that year. I have a weird criteria for these things. It's only because I like to do it right and take my time with it.
@ Ruth - The Trip is really funny. I enjoyed it so much. I actually think it might have worked a little bit better as a short TV miniseries, because it is a little episodic, but this sort of humour is right up my alley :-)
@ Steven - I think 2011 has been a pretty good year. I usually wait until about March of the following year and then go back and add in the delayed releases. Some of the films on this list had 2010 releases overseas. But anything I have seen in an Australian cinema after March (2010 releases I mean) I am going to count in 2011. I don't really have a system, but I wanted to add in a couple of films (Drive and Meek's Cutoff) and drop Cave of Forgotten Dreams down a few spots too...
I'll get back to you on this list once I see twenty films from this year. I've seen four of these (Tree of Life, Of Gods and Men, Rango and Hanna), all of which I liked.
@ James - I'd like to think that Rango down are safe in my Top 10, but you never know what's to come!
@ Anna - I love Steve Coogan in The Trip. I really sided with his character, which reveals a bit about my personality. It is Of Gods and Men! I'd like to read what you thought of Incendies, it was a really moving experience.
@ Sam - I like your list but I haven't seen most of them yet. The Guard would make your Top 5?
@ Nicholas - I hope you like it man. I'm pretty confident with recommending it to people, but there have been a couple of negative reviews on RT that has me a little uneasy. I'm still set in believing that anyone an enjoy this doco, not just racing fans.
@ It's Armadillo, a war doc that follows some Danish soldiers in Afghanistan. It shares a lot in common with Restrepo, but is stylistically heightened.
I am so sure that it will be a popular success that I am fearlessly promoting it to everybody. Unquestionably my favourite cinematic experience of the year. Just need to fit in another screening this week. Some friends want to come with me. Hope you enjoy it Simon, if you can still make a screening that is.
At first I thought this was in descending order and was horrified that CAVE OF FORGOTTEN dreams was your number one pick! The other way makes a lot more sense :P I still reallllly need to catch SENNA
I know you weren't a fan of 'Dreams'. Honestly I think Rise of the Apes would sneak into my Top 20 now. But then again, this list varies every week. There have been a few negative reviews for Senna this week, which has dropped it down from a 100% RT score. That makes me a little sad.
Yeah, Incendies was amazing. Few films have left me feeling so shaken. I gave out a 5 to Senna, A Separation, Tree of Life and Project Nim. Thanks for reading, man.
Ahhh, The Trip looked so funny from the trailer. I might try and see it next week (woowoo - no uni Wednesdays!)

Oh God.
I've only seen Incendies (should write the review soon), Hanna, Rango, In A Better World, Cave and of Gods and Men (is that the one? I think it is).
So the rest I'm looking forward to, Win Win and Tree of Life soon anyway! Drive will probs be a 2012 film for me SOB
Beginners, Midnight In Paris. Everything Must Go, Rango, and The Guard
ReplyDeleteWith Cedar Rapids, Win Win - coming close.
Ridiculous how poor the film year has been - then again we have a lot to look forward to.
Next weekend. "Senna" hits Chicago next weekend. You have got me excited for that movie like no other. Can't wait.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the movie below Drive? if you don't mind me asking?

Right now, yes. Barely any of the films you are speaking of have been released here.
ReplyDeleteWill it be in the top 5 come the end of the year? Not likely.
Gotta tell ya - your love for SENNA is influencing me alot. But I worry Ive missed its cinema runin the UK.

ReplyDeleteI just got done looking at your Best Films by Year section and it's shocking how similar our tastes are.
ReplyDeleteAs for '11, Incendies is the only film I have given a perfect score this year. What an ass kicker of a film that was.
Great site, keep it up.
