Trailer: Lawless

The exciting debut trailer for the John Hillcoat directed, Lawless, which has just been selected to play in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, has been released. Set in Depression-era Franklin County, Virginia, a bootlegging gang is threatened by authorities who want a cut of their profits.

What is immediately striking about this film is the stellar ensemble cast - Shia Labeouf, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Guy Pierce, Jessica Chastain and Mia Masikowska - but having Nick Cave and John Hillcoat (The Proposition) team up again makes this one of the year's most anticipated releases.

It is scheduled for an Australian release on 6 September. Here is the trailer:

  1. This looks pretty darn awesome. And I'm not saying that just coz Jessica Chastain is in it (okay, maybe a little bit)

  2. This looks nice, apart from the fact Shia Labeouf is in it. Love Wasikowska and Chastain in one film!

  3. I so want to see this because of the re-teaming of John Hillcoat and Nick Cave.

Plus, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Tom Hardy, Mia Wasikowska, and a very gorgeous Jessica Chastain. You can't go wrong.

And there's Shia who could be tolerable if he doesn't scream like a bitch or emote.

  4. I didn't realize people are vehemently against Shia. I'm kinda neutral about him, can't really fault the atrocities of Transformers on him. In any case, the draw for me here is Hardy, Oldman, Pearce and Chastain. Oh man, the cast is awesome and the trailer is very intriguing!

  6. This looks awesome. Hllcoat's a really good director and there's something about Pearce's face that tells me this is going to be a brilliant performance.

  7. Wow that looks pretty great. I love Oldman and Hardy, but it was Pearce that really captivated me in this trailer. A new film on my anticipated list!

  8. I agree with all of your thoughts, everyone. I don't dislike Shia - but being skeptical of his abilities has everything to do with Transformers. Who can forget his atrocious work in Transformers 3? He survived the dreck that was Wall Street 2 in good form, though. But with a director like Hillcoat, and an AWESOME cast surrounding him - how did they manage to get Chastain and Wasikowska in the one film? - he'll hold his own. Hopefully the reports out of Cannes are positive. Looking forward to it.

  9. Uhm, I might be in minority here, but it doesn't look that good! As much as I love Olman, Pearce and Chastain, Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy don't seem too convincing to me in the trailer- I don't think Shia is a strong enough actor and Tom's accent is pretty ridiculous! I wil see it for the supporting cast!
