Question

For more professional purposes I have been thinking of changing the title of my blog. I have been considering dropping my name and just calling it The Film Emporium. I want to ask you all what you think of this change? Do you like the current title? When you see that new title will you still attribute it to my site? Have I established enough of an identity to leave my name out? In the new year I will also look into expanding - personalising my domain name and learning how to tinker with the design in an attempt to make the page more presentable and professional looking. But for now, I'd like to get some feedback on the potential name change. I thank you all in advance.

  1. I like it now even though it's a bit long, but TBF The Film Emporium sounds even better! I think you should go for it!

  2. The name change wouldn't be your greatest solution, but it's a start. Changing your domain is a big one too. I'm sure you've heard of a lot of these tips, but I just saw this page and found it interesting...http://handmadesuccess.com/2011/07/get-a-more-professional-look-for-your-blog-in-14-steps/

I believe 'The Film Emporium' would be a better name, unless your trying to promote yourself instead of your blog.

  3. I can see both the positives and negatives with the change. In one sense, it does seem more professional and could draw in new readers. Like Max says in his comment, it would be easier in terms of the domain name and setting up a "brand" across social media and other areas. The downside is that it might seem less personal to someone who likes the fact that the name is less generic.

On the whole, however, I say go for it. I think the benefits will outweigh any minor issues in the long run. Most readers will stick with it, so you're not likely to lose much with the switch.

  4. "Have I established enough of an identity to leave my name out?"

    Yes, you certainly have.

I say go for the change!

  5. But then how will we know who writes for the site? It could be anyone? How will we know it's the one, the only, Andy Buckle?

In seriousness, I think it will be a good change. In my experience, shorter, memorable titles for websites are strong and as long as there isn't another The Film Emporium out there, I think it will be a good change.

  6. Go for it! Make sure there is no other Film Emporium though or that would be pointless.

  7. I heard somewhere it's better to not have your name in the title of your blog unless people recognise your name. The Film Emporium makes it sound less personal and more like a professional site I guess maybe.

  8. Love it, gives you a serious marketable name. Go with it. Can't wait to see the new site.

  9. I kind of like the personal name but I get what you mean about keeping it short. I do like The Film Emporium though, I'd say go for it, but like Castor said, make sure there's no other film blog with that name.

  10. Just wanted to give a quick thank you to everyone who has given me feedback on this idea. It has been very useful. There is a site called Film Emporium (filmemporium.com) which specialises in entertainment insurance, so I don't think if i'll be able to use that. I have a busy day ahead, and I'll look into it later - as well as personalising some responses to everyone's feedback. Thanks again, everyone. Much appreciated!

  11. "Andy Buckle's Good Time Shack o' Films"

Seriously though, the current name is fine but taking out your name would have its own advantages. Either way.

  12. Change is as good as a holiday.

  13. I like the current title, it feels more personal and less generic. But I would recommend getting a custom domain name

  14. @ Anna - Thanks Anna. I appreciate the feedback

@ Max - Thanks for the link to the tips. I should add in a few widgets and gadgets - links to my FB and Twitter accounts - and change my domain name too. I like having it personal, but I want it to be more professional. When people ask me what my blog is called, I always feel a little embarrassed. The Film Emporium, is more generic, but a more marketable brand.

@ Dan - Thanks for the insight Dan. Really appreciate it. I know what you mean - I just have to get my act together and make a decision.

@ Alex - Appreciate it Alex!

@ James - Haha. Really? "The one and only?" Well apart from a pretty unique name, which I may have exhausted by now - I'm not all that unique in my writing. Yet. Anyway, I will consider changing the name - but I want to work on a few other things to support the change (a new logo, domain name change etc) so it might not be until the new year. I just wanted some feedback. Appreciate the comment, James.

@ Castor - Thanks! There is a site called Film Emporium which specialises in entertainment insurance. While it's not the same thing as I do, sticking with a similar title would mean I would need a domain name to be pretty close. They have filmemporium.com so, the exercise could be pretty pointless.

@ Pturner - Yeah, you're absolutely right. I guess people recognise my page because of my name. I am hoping that having 'Emporium' in the title will still attribute the site to me.

@ Anonymous - Thanks for the kind feedback. Much appreciated!

@ Ruth - I think I would prefer a shorter, snappier title too. That's the way I'm leading.

@ Robert - Now that one I like haha.

@ Anonymous - That is true. Haven't taken a holiday in a while, sooo...

@ Bonjour - That is my intention also. Cheers for your opinion on the current title!

  15. I'm a little late to the party. To be honest I like your name better than I like the word "emporium", which feels a bit impersonal in relation to your blog. But then I'm one who really prefer solid blogs to more "professional" looking websites.

  16. I guess I'm more focused on writing and improving my writing than having a flash site - but I just figured I'd seek out a change of some sort. Thank you for the feedback Jessica. I have mostly had good feedback about 'emporium' but not so much my name. I'd like to think up something a little shorter and snappier - but I think I might drop the name eventually.
