Monday Links (16/04/12)

Hey everyone, before I get into this week's links I thought I would quickly re-cap another busy week. I continued my Ghibli marathon with first viewings of My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service, and a second viewing of Princess Mononoke, which is one of the great animated films I have ever seen. In fact, they all are. Battleship and The Deep Blue Sea hit cinemas last Thursday, and The Lucky One and Footnote hit cinemas this week. Check back later in the week (Friday morning to be exact) for a review of The Avengers, and also expect reviews of The Lady, Porco Rosso and Mononoke to also be uploaded this week.

Here is some film chatter:

Be sure to stop by Popcorn Junkie for all the latest news on the upcoming blockbusters. Cameron has exclusive clips and trailers from The Avengers, Prometheus and The Amazing Spiderman.

Sam reviews Vanishing on 7th Street, a little-seen horror film.

Ruth contributes a review of Spirited Away to An Online Universe as part of Miyazaki Month.

In another instalment of the The Directors, Alex looks at Oliver Stone, one of my favourite directors...sometimes.

Plenty of reviews have been coming out of the U.S for Cabin in the Woods. I don't want to read anything about it before going in, but Nick has reviewed the film at Anomalous Material. Sure to be a great read.

For anyone looking for an official synopsis for Tarantino's Django Unchained, you can find it at Nikhat's site, Being Norma Jean.

James reviews Vivre Sa Vie, one of my favourite Godard films.

Sati's review of Shame is the best review of the film I have read yet. A must read.

Ruth, Stevee and Tyler have all posted lists recently: Moments of Cinematic Awesomeness. I am inspired to complete this myself, but it is so very difficult.

Sam reviews one of two Tarantino I like but not love, Jackie Brown. I really should own this one.

John looks ahead to the Summer of movies.

Simon lists his 10 Best Sports Movies

Colin and I didn't agree on The Deep Blue Sea, but his review is well worth a read.

Hope everyone has a great week. This blogging gig is getting tough. So much to do - and finding more and more every week.

  1. Thanks for the linkage. I've had My Neighbor Totoro on my watchlist for ages but have never gotten around to seeing it. Need to rectify that.

    1. Yeah, you should definitely watch it. It is a kids film - but has a beautiful message, and is just a stunning work of animation. I am motivated to work on my own 'Moments of Cinematic Awesomeness' but it is really hard and got a lot going on at the moment.

  2. Sati's review of Shame is uh-mazing! I really need to watch Princess Mononoke again, and Porco Rosso was fantastic. Look forward to seeing your thoughts on them!

    2. You're welcome Ruth. Mononke is EPIC. Such an enormous scale, and is one of his most complex narratives. Pretty special. Looking forward to Porco Rosso - I have heard nothing about this one. Kind of slips under the radar at times.

Sati, I thought it was a comprehensive and accurate analysis of one of the year's best films. Check back on Friday for The Avengers. I think you will be happy with what I have to say.

  3. Thanks for the link, Andy! Yeah, I would highly recommend avoiding all reviews of that film until you see it, which I hope you get to do soon. As a film buff, you should dig it.

    1. I am trying to avoid all spoilers, but I frequent twitter and so do a lot of Americans who have just seen The Cabin in the Woods. Trying to avoid anything about the film. Comes out here in July. Still a long way off.

  4. You seeing The Avengers early? We get it a week before America (on ANZAC day), and I'm trying to con one of my parents into taking me to see it on opening day. I'm so bloody excited!

    And thanks for the link!

  5. Thanks so much for the link Andy! I couldn't agree more, Stone is easily one of my favorite directors, except when he's not.
