Updated (Final) Oscar Predictions

Though I am yet to see The Artist, I have tinkered with my 2011 Oscar Predictions one last time before the announcements. These are my final predictions. I couldn't help but throw in a couple of personal picks that I accept are unlikely, but it's fun to be optimistic.

Each category has some alternatives (listed in order of likelihood) below. I have offered no explanations for these selections - but it is a mix of personal opinion and influence from the results of the lead up awards ceremonies. I have not included the categories of Best Original Song and the Shorts. The Artist and Hugo tied for the most nominations with ten apiece. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

  1. I'll post my official Oscar predictions a fewdays after the nominations are announced as I think I have a good idea on what will Best Picture. It's going to be The Artist.

    1. The nominations are fairly predictable in most categories. I doubt we will see too many surprises on Tuesday. I could see The Tree of Life being left behind if they select only 7 pics though.

    2. Yeah, I think you are right. The Artist is going to win - and I'm sure Ill be fine with that once I have seen it next Monday. These are my nomination predictions - I left Bridesmaids with no nominations, and relegated War Horse to a couple. I am setting myself up for disappointment. Still, I think it is an even spread, and I genuinely think most of the films I have predicted deserve their nominations - but as always, there are so many great films left out. We know they are deserving but amidst the politics of the Oscars, and the kind of films they go for, they have no chance. Yes, Castor, I fear that The Tree of Life will be left out. I have this sneaking suspicion they may only go with six. Down to Moneyball. But I hope I am pleasantly surprised.

  2. Just thought I'd let you know that the link goes to some seedy website...probably not where you want it to go ;)

Otherwise, your predictions are quite good. I'm glad you put Rooney in there...I really hope she gets nominated!

  3. Wow!!! Thanks so much Stevee - I left out the 'l' in blogspot. Yeah, I hope she does too! And Charlize, but that might be asking too much ;-)

  4. The Artist, Hazanavicius, Clooney, Davis, Spencer, Plummer. Those are your major winners (I think). As for your predictions, Malick won't be nominated. Same with Michael Shannon. And it'll be Swinton or Mara, but not both. Of course, I hope I am wrong about all that, but I think this is going to be a very dull Oscar season.

    1. Yeah, I agree with your selections. They are the heavy favourites for the win (so, in the end it doesn't matter who else is nominated). Still, I enjoy seeing surprise nominations for deserved work. I jumped on Indiewire, and they agreed almost identically to me (with both Swinton and Mara) but also were optimistic enough to include TTSS in their eight Best Pic predictions. I thought that was great. I'd take that over War Horse or Bridesmaids. I hope Malick is nominated. It will be either him, Fincher, or Speilberg. Every 4th/5th spot is up in the air - which makes it a little bit exciting, but yes, I still think it is going to be a dull season.

    2. Hell man, give me Fassbender and we'll call it a day.

  5. I really hope these predictions are similar to the actual ones (especially all of the love for The Tree of Life). I think the actual Best Picture nominees end up being The Artist, The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris and Moneyball.

    1. You might be right there - but six just feels so unjustified and shallow. I enjoyed so many films this year. I want ten like last year.

  6. Great predictions! We seem to be pretty close, with most categories differing by just one nominee. Although to be honest, in some cases I prefer your choices over mine, in terms of who is most deserving!

    1. I have quite a lot of 'hopefuls' so my choices are pretty risky on occasions - but yes, it would be great to see these choices replicated - and even more surprises. I jumped on Indiewire today, and they had Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy as one of their Best Pic nominees. That would be great - but I didn't have the guts to include it. Sam goes for Drive/Refn. I doubt it will be called out for Best Pic, but I would love to see it. 30 mins to go!
