22 Best 'New to Me' Films in 2012

The other day I posted my list of the Top 25 Films of 2012, but like last year I also wanted to acknowledge some films that I watched for the first time this year that weren't released in 2012. Here are my 22 top 'New to Me' films from 2012. Last year I revealed the films exclusively using a screen shot, challenging readers to figure out what the film is themselves. I have done it the same way this year.

A Man Escaped (1956), Pickpocket (1959), Au Hasard Balthazar (1966), Once Upon A Time in the West (1968), Solaris (1972), Deep Red (1975), Possession (1981), Paris, Texas (1984), Come and See (1985), My Neighbour Totoro (1988), Remains of the Day (1993), Paradise Lost: The Child Murders of Robin Hood Hills/Purgatory (1996, 2011), Taste of Cherry (1997), Ratcatcher (1999), Werckmeister Harmonies (2000), Anvil! The Story of Anvil (1998), Polytechnique (2009), Shame (2011), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), Holy Motors (2012), The Master (2012), The Imposter (2012).

So, what are your thoughts? What are some of the best films you have seen this year, 2012 releases or otherwise.

  1. I'll have to check out a lot of these Andy!

I saw so many films this year that I now love, my best first time watches in order were: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), RoboCop (1987), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), Leon: The Professional (1994), Die Hard (1988), The Terminator (1984), Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995), American History X (1998), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and Cinderella Man (2005)

Look forward to exploring even more films next year, including that Top 100 of yours! (I will get to Platoon eventually! Haha)

    1. Good job! Some are more obvious than others, but every one provided a memorable experience. I am impressed you recognised Remains of the Day :-)

  4. Love seeing some Bresson. He's one of my favorite directors. I really, really want to see Possession, but it's hard to find here in the states. Also love seeing Werkmeister Harmonies, and, of course Taste of Cherry.

I always find these lists way more interesting and diverse than best of the year lists. Love seeing what people dug into in the past year. I'll be having a similarly themed post going up around the year's end.

  5. Great list, especially the Bresson films where he was a major highlight for me this year. I hope to see more in the new year and hopefully do an Auteurs piece on him.

  6. Paradise Lost was one of the most captivating series I stumbled upon this year...I watched all three parts within a week. So devastating. Dying to see Peter Jackson's final edit with "West of Memphis"

    1. I watched all three within the space of about three days. Watched the first two back-to-back I was so captivated by the case. West of Memphis has a release here in a fortnight, will definitely be checking it out.
